5 Fun August Activities for Seniors & Grandkids
Caring for senior loved ones can be demanding. Caregiving duties don’t take a summer break, making these months particularly tough for members of the sandwich generation, caring for elderly parents and young children.
By the time caregiving tasks are completed, it may be difficult to think of, and plan, fun outings. However, maintaining a social life is good for elderly loved ones and their family caregivers.
We found some St. Louis outings for seniors and kids to enjoy before heading back to school. Here are five events in August worth checking out.
- The Kings, Queens and Castles Exhibit at the World Chess Hall of Fame brings chess to life. Explore a castle and become part of a life-size board, all while learning the game of chess. It’s a great way to celebrate the game and foster a new generation of chess enthusiasts, who have a new hobby to enjoy with senior loved ones.
- Learn to play bocce ball and enjoy a meal at Milo’s Bocce Garden on the Hill. Seniors can teach the youngsters how to play, or they can learn together. If you still have room, stop by Ted Drewes for dessert!
- Catch National Parks Adventure at the St. Louis Science Center’s giant OMNIMAX Theater. Viewers explore America’s great outdoors and discover amazing natural wonders. Amid St. Louis’ dog days of summer, the wise way to enjoy nature is from this air-conditioned, state-of-the-art theater.
- Visit the History Museum for their Capturing the City: Photographs from the Streets of St. Louis, 1900-1930 Exhibit, which opens August 13, 2016. Kids will enjoy the images of historic St. Louis, which may remind seniors of stories from their own childhood.
- Check out the highly acclaimed new St. Louis Blues Museum. Interactive technology and artifact-driven exhibits ensure that there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Visitors will also be treated to the traveling exhibit “A Cast of Blues” which features life-like masks of 40 blues musicians.
